Sewage Ejector & Grinder Pumps in Southeast Michigan

HOWELL | BRIGHTON | PLYMOUTH | ANN ARBOR | FENTON & SURROUNDING AREAS

Does your residence have or need a sewer ejector or sew grinder pump to get waste where it needs to go? At AAA Service Network, we install these efficient devices for homeowners throughout Southeast Michigan. These devices benefit homeowners in rural communities as much as they help homeowners in the heart of the city.

What Is a Sewage Ejector Pump?

A sewage ejector pump is a submersible pump designed to handle solids at a high volume with low pressure. These pumps are relatively simple and low-power, not unlike a sump pump but designed to handle solid waste from your kitchen and bathroom as well as water. A sewage ejector pump will usually be installed in a basin either in or below your basement or outside your home. The pump’s rotation will pull in raw wastewater through the bottom and pump it through the outlet under pressure, usually into a line leading to your septic tank or sewer main.

A sewage ejector pump is a notably higher volume than some other submersible pumps. They’re generally considered a superior option for septic tank systems as they will keep solids and other wastewater mostly separate, as they should be for your septic system to work properly.

What Is a Sewage Grinder Pump?

Sewer grinder pumps collect the wastewater produced by the appliances in your home. This includes water from the dishwasher, washing machine, and bathtubs. This water drains into the grinder tank, which is typically buried outside the home, though it may be located in the basement.

When the water inside the tank reaches the designated level, it triggers a switch that turns the grinder on. This grinds the waste within the tank. Once ground, it then returns the water to either the septic tank or the sewer line. A sewage grinder pump can handle tougher solids thanks to the grinder. It also makes sense in situations where you need to pump a very long distance, have a vertical distance to cover, or need the extra pressure of a grinder pump to pass sewage into a pressurized city sewer main.

What Is an Effluent Pump?

If you’re looking to move so-called grey water with few if any solids in it that aren't from human waste, you may instead want to use an effluent pump. These are designed to handle small solids so that they won’t choke over unexpected solids here and there. They mostly expect to be moving mostly liquid wastewater and are built for higher tolerance for solids than a sump pump and may have an impeller that resists clogs. Still, they’re not up to handling the solids and bacteria that either type of sewage pump is designed for.

Effluent pumps are great for, say, pumping the drainage of a basement laundry room or wet bar up to the main drainage lines, without needing to invest in the more rugged designs of a sewage pump.

What Kind of Pump Do I Have?

In the Southeast Michigan area, it is common for many single-family houses to have sewage ejector pumps, and condominiums/townhomes to have sewer grinder pumps, especially if there is a bathroom on the lower basement level.

If you don't know which type your home has, don't worry. Our expert team will inspect your equipment and assess that for you. We even have some units that can accomplish both grinding and ejecting.
