Water Heater FAQs
How many years does a hot water heater last?
A typical storage-tank water heater will last between eight and 12 years, but if you have good water quality and service the water heater regularly (about once a year) it is possible for it to last 15 or even 20 years. After about 10 years, however, it is worth considering a replacement, especially if your current model is inefficient or needs frequent repairs. Tankless water heaters can last longer with proper maintenance, up to 25 years, but are more expensive initially.
Call a professional water heater repair service, such as our team at AAA Service Network, to determine if repair or replacement is your best option.
What causes hot water to stop working?
If your home has no hot water at all, it is possible that there is a significant problem with your water heater. First, do a bit of basic water heater troubleshooting to eliminate any simple causes, such as incorrect thermostat settings. Check the thermostat dial at the bottom of the water heater and make sure it is set to 120 degrees or above, and not “Vacation” mode. If that is set properly, make sure the power is on for electric models by checking the breakers. For a gas water heater, make sure that it has power and that the pilot light is lit. If it has an electronic igniter, turn the thermostat on and off to make sure the igniter is lighting the burners. Other problems that can cause a water heater to stop working include a damaged heating element, a failed thermostat, a damaged igniter, a bad thermocouple, and more. In all these cases, it is best to call a professional repair service for help.
