What Are the Benefits of Installing a Water Softener?
Water softeners can be an invaluable addition, especially in areas where hard water is a problem. Essentially, water softeners use a process known as an ion exchange. While you don’t need to know the exact science of how this process works, what you should know are the innumerable benefits to it.
When you purchase a water softener, you can benefit from:
- Better tasting water
- Cleaner dishes, cars, and plumbing fixtures
- Softer hair and smoother skin
- Less money wasted on soap and shampoo
- Softer clothes with brighter colors
- Longer life span for water-using appliances
- Crystal-clear water
Having a plentiful source of clean, fresh-tasting water is surely a luxury that you can have in your own home. We are proud to help residents in Howell, Plymouth, Brighton, and the surrounding areas to address any concerns they might have over water quality and finding ways to improve it.
Water Softener Installations
Are you frustrated with hard water in your Southeast Michigan home? At AAA Service Network, we can help. We offer water softener installations throughout the Howell area, and our experts can help you choose the best water softener for your needs. We offer the latest systems with environmentally friendly technologies that reduce salt use by up to 50%.
In a matter of a few hours, our technicians can install your new water softener, typically on the main fresh water line for whole-home plumbing system protection. Other installation options exist for those concerned about sodium intake, such as hot water line installations. The cost to install a water softener will depend on the price of the system, the complexity of the installation, and the costs for labor and materials.

How Do Water Softeners Work?
The effects of hard water are caused by calcium and magnesium that naturally become dissolved in the groundwater as it passes though the earth into an aquifer or well. These minerals can accumulate on the inside of pipes and fixtures, reducing water flow, and they can also cause other problems like staining, skin irritation, and reduced lathering in soaps.
Water softeners are designed to remove calcium and magnesium by replacing them with sodium during an ion exchange process. It uses negatively charged resin beads and a mixture of salt, or sodium chloride, to do this. Because both calcium and magnesium have strong positive charges, and the water softening beads are negatively charged, the undesired minerals are pulled from the water, and sodium, with its weaker positive charge, is free to replace them. Once the system has removed large amounts of minerals, it is flushed and recharged with sodium to continue operating effectively.
Is Soft Water Safe To Drink?
The water softening process increases the amount of sodium in the water, which may be concerning to anyone on a low-salt diet. The actual amount of sodium in softened water, however, is about 30 mg per 8 ounces of water, far less than the 120 mg found in a glass of milk.
Softened water is perfectly safe to drink, with the most abundant sources of both salt and natural minerals being the food that you eat. To learn how a water softener can help your home, contact AAA Service Network today!
